In light of the syrup scandal, Telanganaโs Drugs Control Administration is now demanding that all oral liquid medicines be tested rigorously for industrial toxicants like DEG and EG at multiple stages of production.
Glimpse:
With public safety in crisis over contaminated syrups, the Telangana DCA has issued orders requiring manufacturers to integrate testing for diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) throughout their processes from raw materials to final product release. Violations may lead to severe legal consequences.
To prevent further tragedies, Telanganaโs drug regulators have adopted a zero-tolerance stance: all manufacturers of oral liquid medicines (especially cough, cold syrups) must carry out multi-stage testing for diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG). Raw materials like glycerin and propylene glycol must be sourced only from original, pharma-grade suppliers, and each batch must pass gas chromatography checks before release.
The DCA will perform random inspections, and any manufacturer found negligent faces prosecution under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, with potential prison terms (10 years to life) and minimum fines. In severe harm cases, additional criminal charges may apply.
Officials also emphasize that even outsourced labs must maintain full documentation, and every step in the supply chain must be traceable. The move is part of a broader crackdown to rebuild public trust in the pharmaceutical sector.
โMedicine must never be a gamble. When lives are at stake, every drop must pass the test.โ
