Telangana Diabetes Alarm! Mass Screening Shows High Positivity Among Residents

Published: December 9, 2025

Telangana is witnessing a rising diabetes burden, with recent reports showing a striking number of people testing positive during screening drives highlighting an urgent public health challenge in the state.

Glimpse:

While the exact “85 out of 100” figure circulated online, official data and surveys show that a significant proportion of individuals screened in Telangana  particularly adults above 30 are being diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension during state-led health drives. Other sources suggest 14% of screened individuals are confirmed diabetic, with even higher estimates when considering untreated or undiagnosed cases.

Telangana’s health landscape shows a concerning diabetes trend as authorities scale up screening activities under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD). In recent screening rounds involving millions of residents, a sizeable share of people tested for non-communicable conditions  including diabetes  have shown positive results, underscoring the growing burden of lifestyle diseases in the state. Although government figures show that around 14% of those screened have been diagnosed with diabetes, health experts believe the real prevalence could be higher once undiagnosed and pre-diabetes cases are accounted for  particularly in urban and semi-urban areas like Hyderabad where sedentary lifestyles and dietary habits are shifting rapidly.

Earlier screening data from NP-NCD programmes indicated millions of adults screened, with substantial portions identified for diabetes and hypertension, pushing the state to emphasise early detection and follow-up care strategies. However, the sheer volume of positive diagnoses has raised alarm among public health officials and advocates, who warn that without sustained preventive measures and lifestyle intervention, the diabetes burden could strain healthcare systems further.

“We’re seeing a surge in diabetes detection at community screenings it’s a wake-up call that stronger preventive care, lifestyle awareness and regular check-ups are essential for public health in Telangana.”
