Oura Acquires Gesture Recognition Startup Doublepoint to Advance Wearable AI Capabilities

Published: March 9, 2026

Oura, the company behind the popular Oura Ring smart wearable, has acquired Doublepoint Technologies, a Finnish startup specialising in advanced gesture recognition and hand tracking AI. The deal aims to bring precise, touchless gesture control and contextual interaction capabilities to future Oura wearables, enhancing user experience for health monitoring, smart home integration, and seamless device interaction without relying on screens or buttons.

Glimpse:

Announced on January 28, 2026, the acquisition integrates Doublepoint’s proprietary AI models capable of real time, low power hand and finger tracking using wrist based sensors into Oura’s platform. The technology enables intuitive gesture based controls (e.g., wave to dismiss notifications, pinch to log symptoms, or point to trigger health insights) and improves contextual awareness for activity recognition and sleep staging. The move positions Oura to evolve from passive tracking to active, gesture-driven interaction, with first features expected in future ring generations or companion apps by late 2026.

Oura has acquired Doublepoint Technologies, a Helsinki based startup known for its breakthrough work in low power, wrist based gesture recognition and hand tracking AI. The acquisition, disclosed on January 28, 2026, strengthens Oura’s long term roadmap by adding advanced interaction capabilities to its flagship smart ring and future wearable ecosystem.

Doublepoint’s core technology uses ultra low power sensors and AI algorithms to track hand and finger movements with high accuracy from wrist placement alone no cameras or external markers required. The system supports fine grained gestures (pinch, swipe, point, wave, fist clench) and contextual understanding (e.g., distinguishing intentional gestures from everyday movements), all while consuming minimal battery power making it ideal for always on wearables.

By integrating Doublepoint’s models, Oura aims to transform the ring from a passive health tracker into a proactive, gesture enabled interface. Potential future use cases include:

  • Touchless control of ring features (e.g., double tap or pinch to start activity tracking or log symptoms)
  • Interaction with smart home devices (wave to control lights, point to select music)
  • Enhanced sleep and activity insights (detecting hand movements to improve sleep stage accuracy)
  • Seamless health logging (gesture to mark stress events or medication intake)

The technology also opens doors for Oura to expand beyond health tracking into broader wearable AI experiences, competing more directly with smartwatches and emerging gesture controlled devices.

Oura CEO commented: β€œDoublepoint’s gesture recognition technology is best in class for power efficiency and accuracy. Combining it with Oura’s health sensing platform will unlock new ways for users to interact with their health data naturally and intuitively without ever needing to pull out a phone.”

Doublepoint founders added: β€œOura shares our vision of making technology disappear into everyday life. Together, we can bring truly seamless, gesture-first experiences to the next generation of wearables while keeping the focus on health and wellness.”

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Doublepoint’s team and technology will integrate into Oura’s R&D organisation, with initial features expected in software updates and future hardware releases starting late 2026.

The move reflects the intensifying race among wearable leaders to add more interactive, AI-driven capabilities beyond basic tracking positioning Oura to compete more effectively in the evolving smart ring and health wearable category.

β€œWearables shouldn’t just track you they should understand you. With Doublepoint’s gesture technology, we’re taking the first step toward making Oura a truly intuitive companion that responds to your natural movements.”
