Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel has emphasised India’s strong commitment to developing a resilient and indigenous medical devices industry. Highlighting lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, she outlined key government initiatives aimed at reducing import dependence and positioning the country as a global manufacturing hub.

Speaking at a recent industry event, Anupriya Patel noted that the pandemic exposed India’s heavy reliance on imported high-end medical equipment. She highlighted the National Medical Devices Policy, encouragement of research and entrepreneurship, and the setting up of medical device parks in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The minister called for greater collaboration between government, industry, and healthcare stakeholders to build a stronger, self-reliant ecosystem.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers, Anupriya Patel, has reaffirmed the government’s determination to make India self-reliant in the medical devices sector. In her address, she pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic clearly revealed the country’s excessive dependence on imported high-end medical equipment, which created serious challenges during critical times. Advanced medical devices play a vital role in modern healthcare delivery, yet their high costs and reliance on foreign supplies continue to remain major concerns for accessibility and affordability.

To address these issues, the government has introduced the National Medical Devices Policy, which focuses on promoting innovation-driven manufacturing and gradually reducing dependence on imports. Patel stressed that authorities are actively encouraging research, innovation, and entrepreneurship within the medical technology space. The long-term vision is to transform India into a leading global hub for medical device production, leveraging the nation’s strong intent, skilled workforce, and entrepreneurial capabilities.

A key step in this direction has been the establishment of dedicated medical device parks in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. These parks are designed to bring down production costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and significantly boost domestic manufacturing capacity. Patel also noted the positive impact of various government schemes that are already bringing noticeable improvements to the industry. She expressed confidence that the sector has immense potential to reach greater heights with coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.

The minister urged closer collaboration among the government, industry players, and the healthcare community to create a more robust and integrated ecosystem. She believes that by working together, India can not only achieve self-reliance but also emerge as a trusted global supplier of quality medical devices, ultimately contributing to a healthier and stronger nation.

β€œStrengthening of medical devices is our motto. These schemes are bringing a lot of changes in the industry. The sector has much greater heights to touch. India has intent, skill and entrepreneurial strength. We should work together with coordinated and collaborative efforts for a better, stronger and healthier India.”
