The initiative involves collaboration with multiple agencies including UNICEF and AIIMS Mangalagiri, along with teacher training programmes across districts.
The Andhra Pradesh government has taken a significant step toward improving adolescent health by launching a dedicated digital portal under the Andhra Pradesh School Health and Wellness Programme (APS HWP). Aimed at students between 13 and 19 years of age, the platform seeks to deliver reliable, age-appropriate information on preventive healthcare and wellness directly through an engaging digital learning management system. This marks one of the first statewide initiatives of its kind in the country, aligning with national programmes such as Ayushman Bharat and Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram.
The portal features concise interactive video modules lasting less than 15 minutes each, available in both Telugu and English. These are supplemented by game-based learning, quizzes, online assessments, and certificates awarded to students who score 80% or higher. Topics covered include personal hygiene, mental health, physical development during adolescence, gender equality, HIV prevention, substance abuse risks, road safety, nutrition, healthy relationships, and safe internet practices. The content is designed to encourage self-learning while helping young users make informed decisions and avoid unreliable information often found on social media.
Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav highlighted that the initiative reflects the vision of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to prioritize preventive health education. The portal was developed through partnerships involving the National Health Mission, Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram, the state AIDS Control Society, Departments of Education and Women & Child Welfare, UNICEF, and AIIMS Mangalagiri. It also provides links to child and mental health helplines for additional support. To ensure effective rollout, the government is training approximately 150 teachers and lecturers per district from government schools and junior colleges.
Since its recent launch, the platform has already attracted more than 36,000 student registrations, with girls making up nearly 75% of the early users. Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Veerapandian emphasized the importance of offering scientifically validated content to counter widespread misinformation. Officials expect wider adoption as more schools integrate the portal into their regular health education activities, ultimately contributing to better physical and mental well-being among the stateβs adolescents.
