NIMHANS has introduced a mental health app repository to help users navigate the rapidly growing but often confusing digital mental health landscape in India.
The platform serves as a structured, searchable catalogue of mental health applications, allowing users to explore options based on criteria such as platform (Android or iOS), target audience, mental health concerns, therapeutic approach, features, and cost.
Developed by the NIMHANS-ICMR Centre for Advanced Research in Digital Interventions for Mental Healthcare, the repository is built on a large scale evaluation of over 5,800 apps, of which around 350 were shortlisted for detailed assessment using standardized tools like the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS).
The initiative addresses a key challenge in the digital health space inconsistent quality, lack of scientific validation, and data privacy concerns across many mental health apps. By presenting both features and limitations in a transparent, user friendly format, the repository empowers users to make informed decisions rather than blindly relying on app store ratings.
Importantly, NIMHANS clarified that the repository is not a recommendation or endorsement platform, but an informational resource designed to guide users. Experts also emphasize that while mental health apps can support self care through features like mood tracking, self assessments, and therapy exercises they are not a substitute for professional care.
The repository will be updated regularly to keep pace with the evolving digital mental health ecosystem, where new apps are frequently introduced and existing ones are continuously updated.
This initiative marks a significant step toward improving digital mental health literacy, transparency, and safe adoption of technology, aligning with India’s broader push to integrate digital tools into healthcare while ensuring user safety and quality standards.
“This repository is designed to support informed choices not to recommend apps, but to help users understand them better.”
