India’s Union Health Ministry has launched the JANANI Platform, a new digital healthcare initiative aimed at strengthening the tracking and management of maternal and child healthcare services across the country. The platform is designed to create a unified digital system for monitoring pregnancies, childbirth, immunization, and early childhood healthcare delivery.

Developed under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, JANANI seeks to improve healthcare continuity by enabling real time digital tracking of beneficiaries throughout the maternal and child healthcare journey. The platform will support frontline health workers, hospitals, and administrators with centralized access to healthcare records and service updates.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader digital health transformation under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and is expected to integrate with ABHA IDs, allowing secure and interoperable healthcare record management. Officials stated that the platform will help reduce fragmented record-keeping, minimize duplicate data entry, and improve healthcare coordination across states and districts.

JANANI will digitally monitor key healthcare milestones such as Antenatal Check Ups, High Risk Pregnancy Identification, Institutional Deliveries, Postnatal Care, Vaccination Schedules, Nutrition Support, and Child Growth Tracking. The system is also expected to generate alerts and reminders for healthcare workers to ensure timely interventions and follow ups.

A major focus of the platform is strengthening healthcare delivery in rural and underserved areas by empowering ASHA workers, ANMs, and community healthcare teams with digital tools for better field level coordination and reporting. Experts believe the system can significantly improve maternal and infant health outcomes through earlier risk detection and data driven healthcare planning.

The launch comes as India continues to invest heavily in digital public health infrastructure, including electronic health records, telemedicine, AI-driven healthcare systems, and interoperable healthcare databases. Similar digital initiatives have already demonstrated improvements in healthcare accessibility, monitoring, and operational efficiency across multiple states.

Healthcare experts say digitized maternal and child healthcare systems can help reduce delays in diagnosis, improve immunization coverage, and strengthen preventive healthcare strategies. However, they also stress the importance of strong cybersecurity safeguards, patient consent mechanisms, and healthcare worker training to ensure effective implementation at scale.

The Union Health Ministry stated that JANANI represents a major step toward building a More Connected, Data Driven, and Patient Centric Maternal and Child Healthcare Ecosystem in India.

“Digital tracking and timely intervention can transform maternal and child healthcare outcomes across India.”
