West Bengal Hospitals Gear Up for Ayushman Bharat Rollout Amid Surge in Public Interest

Hospitals across West Bengal, especially in Kolkata, are preparing for the transition to the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) following growing public demand and recent policy developments in the state. Several healthcare institutions have already started documentation, empanelment processes, and operational planning to integrate with the central government’s flagship health insurance scheme.

The renewed momentum comes after the newly formed BJP-led West Bengal government announced its decision to implement Ayushman Bharat in the state during its first cabinet meeting under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also publicly welcomed the move, calling it a major step toward expanding affordable healthcare access in the state.

According to multiple reports, hospitals such as Ruby General Hospital, CMRI, Charnock Hospital, Woodlands Hospital, and Desun Hospital have started internal preparations to align with Ayushman Bharat systems. Some hospitals are already empanelled under the scheme for patients from neighbouring states and are now preparing to accommodate beneficiaries from West Bengal as well.

Healthcare administrators stated that patient enquiries regarding Ayushman Bharat have sharply increased in recent weeks, especially among senior citizens and economically weaker families. Hospitals are reportedly assessing how the transition will work alongside West Bengal’s existing Swasthya Sathi healthcare scheme, which currently provides state sponsored health insurance benefits.

Some reports indicate that the state government may initially operate both schemes in parallel to avoid disruption for patients already enrolled under Swasthya Sathi. Officials and hospital administrators emphasized the importance of a phased transition to ensure continuity of care, faster reimbursements, and minimal administrative confusion.

Ayushman Bharat is currently one of the world’s largest government funded health insurance programmes, offering up to ₹5 lakh annual health coverage per eligible family for hospitalization and advanced medical treatment. The scheme supports cashless treatment at empanelled public and private hospitals across India.

Healthcare experts believe the rollout in West Bengal could significantly expand healthcare accessibility, particularly for low income populations requiring tertiary and specialised care. However, they also note that implementation success will depend on smooth hospital integration, reimbursement mechanisms, beneficiary awareness, and coordination between state and central healthcare systems.

“The welfare of my sisters and brothers of West Bengal is supreme.”
