The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned an extra ₹700 crore for the AIIMS Darbhanga project on March 25, 2026. This brings the total estimated cost to nearly ₹1,964 crore, aiming to speed up construction of the super-specialty hospital, medical college, and nursing college in Darbhanga district.
Glimpse:
Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda informed Parliament that the additional funding will help overcome delays and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in north Bihar and the Mithila region. The project, originally approved in September 2020 with a foundation stone laid by PM Modi on November 13, 2024, will feature a 750-bed super-specialty hospital on 187 acres of land provided by the Bihar government.
The Central government has given a significant push to healthcare development in Bihar by approving an additional ₹700 crore for the proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga. This fresh allocation, cleared during a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 25, 2026, comes on top of the earlier sanctioned ₹1,264 crore, pushing the overall project cost close to ₹1,964 crore.
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda shared the update in the Lok Sabha while responding to a question. He highlighted that the extra funds are meant to fast-track construction activities and resolve execution challenges that had slowed progress on the ambitious institute. Once completed, AIIMS Darbhanga is set to become a major hub for advanced medical treatment, research, and training, greatly benefiting residents of north Bihar and the Mithila region.
The campus is being developed on approximately 187 acres of land allocated by the Bihar government near the Shobhan-Ekmi bypass in Darbhanga district. Plans include a super-specialty hospital with around 750 beds, along with a medical college and a nursing college. This integrated facility will not only expand access to high-quality tertiary healthcare but also boost medical education capacity and create opportunities for specialized training in the region.
The project received initial approval in September 2020, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone on November 13, 2024. The latest financial boost aligns with the Centre’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country, particularly in underserved areas. Leaders, including Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi, have welcomed the decision, describing it as a major step toward fulfilling long-standing demands for better medical facilities in Bihar.
This development is expected to bring modern healthcare services closer to millions while generating employment and enhancing the overall medical ecosystem in the state through improved research and academic programs.
“The additional ₹700 crore funding will help accelerate the construction of AIIMS Darbhanga and address the delays that have affected the project’s progress”
