GE HealthCare has announced a $2.3 billion all-cash acquisition of Intelerad, a provider of cloud-based medical imaging software, to build a fully connected, AI-enabled imaging ecosystem spanning hospital, outpatient, and ambulatory care settings.
Glimpse:
By bringing Intelerad into its fold, GE HealthCare accelerates its shift toward a SaaS (software-as-a-service) imaging model and strengthens its cloud imaging portfolio. Intelerad’s strengths in cloud PACS, AI orchestration, and enterprise imaging workflows will help GE deliver comprehensive, scalable imaging solutions across care settings from large academic hospitals to outpatient clinics.
GE HealthCare has struck a major deal to acquire Intelerad, a leading medical imaging software firm, for $2.3 billion in cash. The move is part of GE’s broader strategy to scale its cloud-enabled imaging capabilities, delivering more integrated and intelligent solutions across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Intelerad brings extensive cloud-first capabilities including cloud PACS, AI workflow orchestration, enterprise imaging, and image sharing which complement GE’s strengths in radiology hardware and clinical AI. By combining these offerings, GE intends to build a unified, cloud-first imaging ecosystem that spans hospital networks, outpatient clinics, ambulatory care, and teleradiology.
From a financial perspective, the deal is expected to significantly boost GE’s recurring revenue stream. Intelerad’s business model, largely based on SaaS, brings predictable, subscription-based income. GE forecasts that Intelerad will generate approximately $270 million in the first full year post-acquisition, with nearly 90% of that being recurring revenue. The company also projects a high-single-digit return on invested capital by the fifth year after the deal closes.
This acquisition also marks a major exit for Intelerad’s private equity backers: Hg Capital and TA Associates will fully exit the business as part of the transaction. GE estimates the deal will close in the first half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
“Our acquisition of Intelerad will bring additional cloud-enabled and intelligent solutions in radiology and cardiology extending our capabilities into outpatient networks and enabling care teams to be more efficient and deliver precision care.”
