Doctors Urge Caution! Firecracker-Related Eye Injuries Surge This Deepavali

Published: October 19, 2025

As Deepavali festivities intensify, doctors across India are raising alarms over a significant rise in firecracker-related eye injuries. Despite safety guidelines, hospitals report an influx of patients, particularly children, suffering from burns, abrasions, and even permanent vision loss due to mishandling of fireworks.

Glimpse:

During Deepavali, firecracker-related eye injuries were reported in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. In Bengaluru, 12 people, including seven children, were treated at local hospitals, while in Hyderabad, 47 individuals, including 20 children, sought treatment, with 18 hospitalized. Doctors urge the use of protective eyewear, safe distances, and prompt medical care to prevent accidents.

As Deepavali approaches, ophthalmologists across India are urging the public to exercise caution during firecracker celebrations to prevent eye injuries. Despite the promotion of ‘green’ firecrackers, which are considered less harmful to the environment, the risk of eye injuries remains significant. In Bengaluru, hospitals have reported a surge in cases, with injuries ranging from mild irritation to severe, vision-threatening damage.

Doctors emphasize the importance of wearing protective eyewear, maintaining a safe distance from fireworks, and supervising children closely. Immediate medical attention is advised for injuries, with initial steps including thorough rinsing and loose eye coverage without using home remedies. Key safety tips include avoiding contact lenses, not relighting failed crackers, and keeping a first-aid kit accessible.

In case of an eye injury, experts recommend covering the eye with a clean cloth or shield, avoiding pressure, and reaching an ophthalmologist immediately. Hospitals are on high alert during this festive season, with dedicated teams ready to handle emergencies round the clock.

“The misuse of prescription drugs like mephentermine for performance enhancement is not only illegal but also life-threatening. We are committed to ensuring public safety and will continue our crackdown on such illicit activities.”
