CommonSpirit Health has finalized an agreement to sell its Ohio-based Trinity Health System to UPMC, marking a significant restructuring move in the U.S. healthcare landscape.

The deal involves the transfer of multiple hospitals and healthcare facilities across the Ohio Valley, including Trinity Medical Center West, Trinity Medical Center East, Trinity St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital, and Trinity Twin City Medical Center, along with associated clinics.

While financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, the agreement is Expected To Close In Fall 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions.

For UPMC, the acquisition represents a Strategic Expansion Into Ohio, a market where it previously had minimal presence. The move will allow the Pittsburgh based health system to extend its network beyond Pennsylvania, strengthening its regional footprint and access to new patient populations.

For CommonSpirit, one of the largest nonprofit healthcare systems in the U.S., the sale aligns with its ongoing efforts to Optimize Its Portfolio And Ensure Long Term Sustainability Of Care Delivery. The organization had been actively seeking a partner capable of enhancing Trinity’s clinical services while maintaining its mission driven approach.

Leaders from both organizations emphasized a shared commitment to High Quality, Patient Centered Care, with expectations that the transition will improve healthcare access and services in the Ohio Valley region.

Industry observers see this deal as part of a broader trend of Consolidation In The U.S. Hospital Sector, where large health systems are acquiring regional providers to expand reach, improve efficiencies, and strengthen care delivery networks.

“At the heart of this integration is the enduring commitment to deliver high-quality care and serve the community.”
