BPCL Launches Advanced 50 Bed Hospital at Kedarnath to Boost Emergency Healthcare in Himalayas

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has strengthened healthcare infrastructure in Uttarakhand by supporting the development of a modern 50-bedded high altitude hospital at Shri Kedarnath Dham. The project was developed in partnership with the Swami Vivekanand Health Mission Society (SVHMS) to improve emergency healthcare access for pilgrims and local residents in one of India’s most challenging Himalayan regions.

Located at an altitude of nearly 12,000 feet, the new facility replaces the earlier temporary 8-bed setup that struggled to manage the rising patient load during the annual Char Dham Yatra season. Multiple reports confirm that the hospital is equipped to handle respiratory distress, cardiac emergencies, trauma, neurological conditions, and other altitude related medical complications common among pilgrims visiting Kedarnath.

The hospital provides round the clock emergency and critical care services with ICU support, ventilators, oxygen facilities, diagnostic laboratories, portable ventilators, ambulance services, and trained high altitude medical professionals. Reports also confirmed that the facility has referral support linked to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced critical care cases.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami formally inaugurated the hospital and stated that the facility would significantly improve healthcare services for both pilgrims and residents in the difficult Himalayan terrain. Officials also highlighted that extensive healthcare arrangements, including oxygen support and emergency medical services, are being strengthened along the Kedarnath Yatra route.

According to BPCL and SVHMS, the hospital is expected to serve more than one lakh patients annually, including nearly 30,000 emergency cases. SVHMS documents show that the earlier Kedarnath medical facility had already treated lakhs of pilgrims since 2019, creating the need for a larger and more advanced hospital infrastructure.

The project is part of BPCL’s larger Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) healthcare initiatives focused on improving medical access in remote and underserved regions of India. Experts believe the hospital could become a critical lifesaving facility during peak pilgrimage periods where rapid emergency response is often difficult because of extreme weather, low oxygen levels, and limited terrain access.

“Improving access to quality, inclusive, and timely healthcare continues to be a key focus area for us.”
