Siemens Healthineers Plans Exit from American Oncology Institute in ₹2,000 Cr Deal

Global medical technology giant Siemens Healthineers is reportedly planning to exit its India based cancer care network, American Oncology Institute (AOI), through a deal estimated at nearly ₹1,500–2,000 crore. The move is being seen as a major development in India’s rapidly expanding oncology healthcare sector.

According to reports, investment advisory firm Alvarez & Marsal has been appointed to manage the transaction process, while several private equity firms and strategic healthcare players have been approached as potential buyers. Among the names being discussed is Healthcare Global Enterprises, the cancer care chain backed by KKR.

American Oncology Institute currently operates 16 hospitals across India along with one facility in Sri Lanka. The oncology network was originally operated under Cancer Treatment Services International before being acquired by Varian Medical Systems in 2019. Siemens Healthineers later gained control of AOI after acquiring Varian in 2021.

Compared with broader healthcare industry reports, analysts believe this potential exit reflects a larger strategic restructuring underway at Siemens Healthineers globally. International business reports indicate the company is increasingly focusing on its core imaging and precision therapy businesses while reassessing non-core investments amid pressure in global diagnostics markets, especially in China.

Industry experts say India’s oncology sector is witnessing significant investor interest because of the rising demand for specialized cancer treatment, advanced radiotherapy infrastructure, and integrated oncology hospital networks. The possible AOI transaction could therefore become one of the most closely watched healthcare acquisition deals of the year.

Healthcare analysts also note that private equity firms are increasingly investing in cancer care platforms due to the long term growth potential of oncology services, AI-assisted diagnostics, and precision treatment technologies. Similar expansion trends have recently been observed across digital health, robotic surgery, and specialized treatment networks in India’s healthcare ecosystem.

“India’s cancer care industry is entering a new era where technology, investment, and specialized healthcare networks are becoming the backbone of future oncology treatment.”
