A woman from Auraiya district (UP) suffered a sudden jaw dislocation when she tried to bite into a large pani-puri (golgappa), leaving her mouth stuck open. The case underscores risks of over-opening the jaw and a lesser-known danger associated with street food indulgence.
Glimpse:
During a family stop for golgappas, the woman opened her mouth wide for a big bite but the jaw dislocated instantly, and she could not close her mouth again. After first-aid failed at the local clinic, she was referred to a higher medical facility. Medical experts say jaw dislocation (a form of Temporomandibular joint disorder TMD) can occur if the lower jaw (mandible) is forced beyond its normal limits.
In Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh, a 42-year-old woman named Inkila Devi was enjoying street-food with family when a single bite of golgappa turned risky. As soon as she tried to fit the snack into her mouth, her jaw dislocated and stayed “wide open,” with half the golgappa still inside.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors attempted manual repositioning, but could not restore jaw alignment. She was then referred to a larger medical college hospital for advanced care. Even though dislocation was corrected later, she continued to report pain highlighting how serious such incidents can be.
Experts warn that jaw dislocation often classified under TMJ disorders can be triggered not only by trauma but also by sudden, excessive opening of the mouth while eating, yawning or laughing. They list common risk factors: strain on jaw ligaments, misaligned joints, or previous jaw-joint issues. Symptoms may include jaw pain, popping or clicking sounds, locking (open or closed), earache, headache or restricted mouth movement.
Given the suddenness and severity, many doctors caution that any jaw pain, clicking, or discomfort when eating should not be ignored and forcing a wide open bite should be avoided.
“One oversized bite can turn a casual snack into a medical emergency recognizing warning signs and eating mindfully might save your jaw.”
