PLI Scheme Gives India’s MedTech Sector a Major Makeover Domestic Device Manufacturing Gets a Big Push

Published: December 3, 2025

The PLI Scheme for medical devices is accelerating India’s medtech manufacturing boom  with new greenfield projects, local production of advanced devices (like MRI, CT and dialysis machines), and fresh investments aiming to cut import-dependence and build local capacity.

Glimpse:

Under the PLI policy, India has commissioned over 20 greenfield medical-device projects  covering imaging, renal, anaesthesia & cardio-respiratory equipment, implants and more.  As of 2025, devices like MRI scanners, CT machines and dialysis units are now being produced domestically, marking a shift away from import-heavy dependence. The goal: reduce import dependence, meet clinical demand locally, and position India as a manufacturing hub for medical devices.

India’s medtech industry has received a strong push through the PLI Scheme dedicated to medical-device manufacturing. As per the scheme framework, the government supports production of devices in key categories: radiology & imaging (ionizing and non-ionizing), cancer care/radiotherapy devices, anaesthesia & cardio-respiratory/renal medical devices, and implants (including implantable electronic devices).

So far, multiple greenfield manufacturing units have been commissioned under this initiative, leading to the local production of high-value medical equipment that India previously imported  including MRI and CT scanners, and dialysis machines. This shift is expected to reduce import reliance, lower device costs, and improve availability of critical equipment across hospitals in India.

Industry analysts foresee this as a long-term catalyst: with improved manufacturing infrastructure, India’s medical-device market  already estimated at several tens of thousands of crores  could expand rapidly. However, some stakeholders note challenges remain: high-capex requirements, stringent incremental sales thresholds to claim incentives, and under-utilization of some newer medtech parks  which may limit participation by smaller firms.

If implemented and scaled well, the PLI push could not only meet India’s growing demand for medical devices (given rising healthcare infrastructure needs) but also open export opportunities  helping India emerge as a global medtech manufacturing hub.

“With PLI, devices that were once imported are now being built here it’s not just about manufacturing locally, it’s about ensuring our hospitals have access to the tools they need, right when they need them.”
