Abbott has launched Libre Assist, a generative AI feature integrated into the Libre by Abbott mobile app, that predicts how meals may affect glucose levels before consumption. Users input food via text or photo for color-coded impact ratings and personalized tips, with post-meal verification using FreeStyle Libre CGM data offering proactive guidance at no extra cost.
Glimpse:
Debuted at CES 2026, Libre Assist addresses “mealtime decision fatigue” for diabetes patients by identifying ingredients, forecasting glucose responses (green/minor, yellow/moderate, orange/major), and suggesting adjustments. It creates a closed feedback loop with Libre 3 Plus sensors for real-world confirmation, enhancing confidence and adherence. Available free in the existing app for Apple and Android users.
Abbott has introduced a game-changing generative AI tool to empower people with diabetes in making informed, real-time food choices. Libre Assist, unveiled at CES 2026 and rolled out immediately, integrates seamlessly into the Libre by Abbott app—used by millions worldwide alongside Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems.
How it works: Users simply snap a photo of their meal or enter a text description. The GenAI algorithm identifies ingredients, estimates potential glucose impact, and displays a simple color-coded rating:
Green: Minor impact.
Yellow: Moderate impact.
Orange: Major impact.
It also offers practical tips to mitigate spikes e.g., choosing plain yogurt over flavored, or eating proteins/greens before starches.
Post-meal, the feature reconciles predictions with actual glucose data from the user’s Libre 3 Plus sensor, building a personalized feedback loop to refine future guidance over time.
Marc Taub, Vice President of Technical Operations for Abbott’s diabetes care business, explained: “People living with diabetes need more than apps that just log food and fall short of helping them with meal decisions. That’s why Abbott built Libre Assist a free, advanced predictive tool that delivers personalized meal guidance and works with our leading Libre technology to deliver real-time glucose insights.”
This closed-loop validation sets Libre Assist apart from basic logging apps, providing medically informed predictions grounded in the user’s own physiological responses.
Availability & Access:
Free within the existing Libre by Abbott app (no separate download or prescription needed).
Compatible with Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre CGM portfolio, used by over 7 million people in 60+ countries.

The launch reinforces Abbott’s decade-long leadership in sensor-based glucose monitoring, evolving from reactive tracking to proactive, AI-augmented lifestyle support.
“Libre Assist delivers predictive, personalized guidance before a meal and then confirms the outcome with CGM data afterward, giving people confidence and clarity with every bite.”
