Ayushman Bharat Health Card: Key Benefits and How It’s Transforming Healthcare Access in India

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) health card commonly known as the Ayushman Card provides up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation care. As of early 2026, with over 420 million cards issued, it remains India’s flagship public health insurance scheme, offering cashless treatment at more than 29,000 empanelled hospitals while integrating with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) for seamless digital health records and portability across states.

Glimpse:

Eligible families (bottom 40–50% of the population based on SECC 2011 criteria) receive a paperless, biometric-enabled Ayushman card that covers hospitalisation expenses for over 1,900 procedures across 27 specialties, including cancer treatment, cardiac surgeries, organ transplants, and critical care. Benefits include zero out-of-pocket costs at empanelled hospitals, no cap on family size or age, nationwide portability, and linkage to ABHA digital health IDs for lifelong health records making it one of the world’s largest government-funded health assurance programmes.

The Ayushman Bharat health card, officially issued under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), has become the cornerstone of India’s effort to provide financial protection against catastrophic health expenses. Launched in 2018 and continuously expanded, the scheme now covers more than 55 crore individuals from economically vulnerable families, identified primarily through the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 database and expanded via state-specific inclusion criteria.

Each eligible family receives an annual cover of ₹5 lakh on a floater basis no per-person limit, no age restrictions, and no cap on the number of family members. The card enables completely cashless and paperless hospitalisation at any of the over 29,000 empanelled public and private hospitals across the country, covering pre- and post-hospitalisation expenses, diagnostics, medicines, and room charges. More than 1,900 procedures and packages are included, spanning 27 major specialties such as cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, neurology, general surgery, urology, and organ transplants.

One of the most powerful features is nationwide portability: a card issued in any state can be used anywhere in India, ensuring continuity of care for migrant families or those seeking treatment in metro cities. Since integration with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), the health card is now linked to a unique Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), enabling secure digital storage and sharing of medical records, prescriptions, lab reports, and discharge summaries across hospitals and telemedicine platforms.

For beneficiaries, the practical benefits are substantial:

  • Zero out-of-pocket costs for covered treatments (no user charges at empanelled facilities)
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions from day one
  • No waiting period for chronic or serious illnesses
  • Free diagnostics, medicines, and implants during hospitalisation
  • Support for high-cost procedures such as chemotherapy, radiation, cardiac bypass, joint replacements, and kidney transplants
  • Reduced financial stress families avoid distress sales of assets or high-interest loans for medical emergencies

As of January 2026, the scheme has authorised over 7 crore hospital admissions with claims worth more than ₹1 lakh crore, with women accounting for more than half of beneficiaries. States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar have achieved particularly high utilisation rates through strong awareness campaigns and dense empanelment networks.

The health card is issued through multiple channels: common service centres (CSCs), empanelled hospitals, Ayushman kiosks, state health portals, and mobile apps. Beneficiaries can check eligibility, download e-cards, locate nearest hospitals, and track claims status via the Ayushman Bharat app or website.

While challenges remain such as uneven hospital empanelment in remote areas, occasional delays in claim settlements, and the need for greater awareness in rural communities the Ayushman card has undeniably reduced financial hardship and improved access to quality hospital care for tens of millions of Indians.

“The Ayushman Bharat health card is more than insurance it is dignity and security for families facing serious illness. It ensures no one is pushed into poverty because of medical expenses.”
