India and Japan have significantly expanded their bilateral science and healthcare agenda, signing new agreements focused on Quantum Technology, Health Research, Medical Devices, And Emerging Digital Technologies during high level talks in New Delhi.

The discussions took place between Jitendra Singh and Kimi Onoda, alongside senior delegations from both countries. The engagement marked another major step in strengthening the India-Japan strategic partnership in Science, Technology, And Innovation.

A key outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) on Quantum Science and Technology between Japan’s Cabinet Office and India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST). The agreement opens new avenues for collaboration in Quantum Computing, Secure Communication Networks, Quantum Sensing, and Advanced Computing Systems.

Both countries also exchanged a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in Health and Medical Devices involving the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Department of Science and Technology, and Japan’s Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). The partnership is expected to accelerate Joint Medical Research, Healthcare Innovation, and Development of Advanced Medical Technologies.

Officials highlighted that the collaboration builds upon the broader India-Japan Science, Technology and Innovation Partnership that was expanded following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan in 2025. The agenda now includes emerging areas such as AI, Advanced Manufacturing, Cyber Physical Systems, Electric Mobility, Clean Energy, and Deep Tech Innovation.

During the discussions, Japan expressed strong interest in India’s National Quantum Mission, particularly in areas like quantum computing infrastructure, secure communication, and innovation hubs. Both sides also explored plans for Researcher Exchange Programmes, Startup collaborations, Industry Internships, and Institutional Partnerships to strengthen long term scientific cooperation.

Healthcare cooperation emerged as another major pillar of the talks. The countries discussed improving collaboration in Digital Health Systems, Resilient Medical Supply Chains, Medical Devices, Biomedical Research, and Workforce Development, aligning with the outcomes of the recent India-Japan Joint Committee Meeting on Healthcare.

Experts believe the partnership reflects a growing global trend where countries are forming strategic alliances in Frontier Technologies and Healthcare Innovation to strengthen competitiveness, resilience, and research capabilities. India’s rapidly expanding technology ecosystem combined with Japan’s advanced manufacturing and scientific expertise is expected to create strong opportunities for co-development and commercialization.

The collaboration also positions both nations to play a stronger role in shaping the future of AI-Driven Healthcare, Next Generation Computing, Precision Medicine, and Secure Digital Infrastructure across Asia and beyond.

“India and Japan share a natural synergy in science and technology. Together, we can accelerate innovation in frontier areas and translate research into impactful societal outcomes.”
