Google Unveils Screenless Fitbit Air to Power the Future of AI-Driven Health Coaching

Google has officially launched the Fitbit Air, a lightweight screenless fitness tracker designed to expand AI-powered health coaching and continuous wellness monitoring. The new wearable marks one of Google’s biggest health tech announcements since acquiring Fitbit and signals the company’s stronger push into AI-driven personalized healthcare.

Unlike traditional smartwatches, Fitbit Air features a minimalist, screenless, and buttonless design focused on distraction-free 24/7 health tracking. The device continuously monitors heart rate, blood oxygen (SpO2), skin temperature, sleep quality, heart rate variability, workouts, calories, and irregular heart rhythms including atrial fibrillation alerts. Reports confirm the tracker is designed for all day and overnight wear with up to seven days of battery life.

A major highlight of the launch is Google Health Coach, an AI-powered personal wellness assistant built using Google’s Gemini AI technology. The system provides personalized workout guidance, recovery suggestions, sleep insights, nutrition support, and wellness recommendations based on real time user data collected through Fitbit Air and connected health platforms.

Google also announced that the Fitbit app will be rebranded as the new Google Health app starting May 19, 2026. The updated platform will combine health data from Fitbit devices, Pixel Watches, Android phones, Apple Health integrations, medical records, and third party fitness apps into a unified dashboard. Officials say the move aims to solve long standing fragmentation issues in digital healthcare tracking.

According to multiple technology reports, Fitbit Air directly targets the growing market for minimalist wearable devices currently dominated by companies such as Whoop and Oura. Google appears to be positioning Fitbit Air as a lower cost, AI-centric alternative focused more on preventive health and coaching rather than smartwatch notifications and apps.

The wearable is priced at approximately $99.99 in the United States, while premium AI coaching features require a Google Health Premium subscription costing around $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually. Google is also offering a special Stephen Curry edition Fitbit Air and multiple interchangeable band styles targeting fitness, lifestyle, and fashion focused users.

Healthcare and technology experts believe Google’s latest move reflects a broader industry trend toward proactive and preventive healthcare powered by AI, wearable sensors, and centralized digital health ecosystems. The company also emphasized that the Google Health platform will remain ad-free and that users will maintain control over health data sharing and privacy settings.

However, some longtime Fitbit users have expressed concerns over the gradual removal of older Fitbit community features and the growing shift toward subscription based AI services after Fitbit’s deeper integration into Google’s ecosystem.

“Fitbit Air is a bridge to a more holistic view of your health and wellness.”
