India is set to gain one of its most comprehensive and digitally advanced health datasets as the sixth round of the National Family Health Survey prepares for release in May. Conducted during 2023–24, this massive exercise has covered over 6.79 lakh households across all states and Union Territories, making it one of the largest health surveys ever undertaken in the country.

What sets this edition apart is its Fully Digital Data Collection Approach, marking a significant shift in how large scale public health data is gathered in India. Using Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) systems, the survey incorporated real time validation, error detection, and structured data checks to ensure higher accuracy and reliability.

The survey is expected to deliver detailed insights into key health indicators, including maternal and child health, fertility rates, nutrition levels, family planning practices, and access to healthcare services. In addition, it is likely to provide updated data on non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, along with valuable insights into the impact of COVID-19 on households and healthcare systems.

NFHS has long served as a critical benchmark for policymakers, enabling them to track progress, identify gaps, and design targeted health interventions. With NFHS-6, the availability of digitally collected, high quality data is expected to strengthen evidence based decision making and improve the effectiveness of public health programmes across the country.

The survey continues to be coordinated by the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Its findings will play a vital role in shaping future strategies in healthcare delivery, population health management, and digital health integration in India.

As India moves toward a more data driven healthcare ecosystem, NFHS-6 stands as a major milestone not just in scale, but in the way technology is redefining how health insights are captured and used.

“Data is becoming the foundation of modern healthcare and NFHS-6 is set to redefine how India understands its health.”
