Following a landmark political victory in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to Expedite The Implementation Of The Ayushman Bharat Health Scheme in the state, signaling a major shift in healthcare access for millions of residents.
In his post election address, Modi assured that the flagship Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) would receive approval in the very first cabinet meeting of the new government, underscoring the urgency of bringing the scheme to Bengal.
The scheme, which provides Cashless Health Insurance Coverage Of Up To ₹5 Lakh Per Family Annually, has been widely implemented across India but was not operational in West Bengal earlier due to policy differences between the Centre and the previous state government.
With the new political landscape, the Centre aims to Integrate Bengal Into The National Healthcare Safety net, enabling beneficiaries to access treatment across a vast network of empanelled hospitals. The move is expected to significantly improve healthcare affordability, particularly for economically weaker sections.
Beyond healthcare, the Prime Minister also outlined a broader vision for the state, including Job Creation, Improved Safety, and Infrastructure Development, positioning Ayushman Bharat as a cornerstone of this transformation.
Experts believe the rollout could have a Transformational Impact On Public Health Outcomes, reducing out of pocket expenses and improving access to quality medical services. The development also reflects a wider push to expand central welfare schemes into regions where they were previously limited.
“In the very first cabinet meeting, the Ayushman Bharat scheme will be given the green signal.”
