One in 14 Telangana Adults Face Kidney Damage as South India Tops Risk List

Published: October 24, 2025

A recent study shows that approximately 7 % of adults in Telangana have impaired kidney function, placing the state among the highest-risk regions in India for kidney damage.

Glimpse:

Data from a national survey reveal that about 7.4 % of Telangana’s adult population suffers from impaired kidney function  more than double the national average of 3.2 %. Experts point to rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, heat stress, and self-medication as key drivers.

A comprehensive survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in collaboration with other bodies found that approximately 7.4 % of adults in Telangana show signs of impaired kidney function (IKF). This figure is significantly higher than the national average and places the state at the top of kidney-disease burden among Indian states.
Medical professionals attribute this alarming trend to a combination of lifestyle and environmental factors: high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, excessive salt and sugar intake, frequent use of painkillers and herbal remedies, heat stress and dehydration, and exposure to agrochemicals.

With kidney disease often progressing silently until advanced stages, nephrologists are urging the public to get screened early. A focused emphasis is being placed on annual kidney function tests for adults, especially those with blood pressure or sugar problems.

“Lifestyle changes, excess salt and sugar consumption, obesity and poor dietary control are worsening the problem,”
