The Telangana government has inaugurated 1 Bio, a ₹150 crore single-use bioprocess design and scale-up hub at Genome Valley a pilot-to-scale facility aimed at accelerating biologics, next-gen therapeutics, and biotech innovation.
Glimpse:
1 Bio features 500 L single-use bioreactors, advanced upstream/downstream systems, and a dedicated analytical suite. Built in partnership with Thermo Fisher Scientific, the facility includes 1.5 lakh sq ft of R&D labs, configurable innovation suites, and training labs. It is designed to provide predictable, affordable scale-up infrastructure for both startups and established firms, reducing capital burden and speeding up biologics development.
Telangana’s Industries & IT Minister, D. Sridhar Babu, formally inaugurated 1 Bio India’s first single-use bioprocess design and scale-up hub located at Genome Valley. Developed via a public–private partnership involving Telangana Life Sciences, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC), 1 Bio occupies a two-acre campus.
The facility includes single-use bioreactors up to 500 L, upstream and downstream systems, and an analytical suite for process validation and scale-up work. Adjacent to this is a 150,000-sq-ft area comprising plug-and-play R&D labs, configurable innovation suites, shared analytical spaces, and bioprocess training labs creating an integrated ecosystem for biologics development.
Thermo Fisher Scientific has committed ₹90 crore to build a Bioprocess Design Centre (BDC) and a co-located Customer Experience Centre within 1 Bio. On the government’s side, ₹150 crore has been allocated for core infrastructure development. The hub is also expected to draw in an additional ~₹500 crore in private investment and create over 500 specialized biotech jobs.
Minister Sridhar Babu said 1 Bio addresses a key gap in India’s biopharma ecosystem affordable, predictable pilot-scale infrastructure allowing innovators and companies to validate and scale processes without bearing the full capital burden. The launch also coincided with Genome Valley’s 25-year anniversary, marking the next phase of growth for one of India’s premier biotech clusters.
“1 Bio not only lowers the barrier to biologics scale-up but also fast-tracks the journey from discovery to clinical readiness for India’s biotech innovators.”
