The Cigna Group has announced that Brian Evanko, current President of Evernorth Health Services, will succeed David M. Cordani as Chief Executive Officer effective February 3, 2026. Cordani, who has led the company for 15 years, will transition to Executive Chairman of the Board, ensuring continuity during the leadership change while continuing to guide strategic direction and stakeholder relationships.
Glimpse:
The succession plan, disclosed on January 27, 2026, reflects a carefully orchestrated transition at one of the largest U.S. health services companies. Evanko, who has driven Evernorth’s rapid growth into a $130+ billion revenue engine, will assume full CEO responsibilities while Cordani remains actively involved as Executive Chairman. The move underscores Cigna’s confidence in its internal leadership pipeline and focus on sustaining momentum across its medical, pharmacy, and health services businesses.
The Cigna Group has named Brian Evanko as its next Chief Executive Officer, succeeding David M. Cordani who has served as CEO since 2010. The transition, effective February 3, 2026, was announced by the company’s Board of Directors on January 27, 2026, following a thorough succession planning process.
Evanko currently serves as President of Evernorth Health Services, Cigna’s high-growth health services division that includes Express Scripts (pharmacy benefit management), Accredo (specialty pharmacy), and eviCore (utilization management and specialty solutions). Under Evanko’s leadership since 2020, Evernorth has grown into one of the largest and most profitable health services platforms in the industry, generating over $130 billion in annual revenue and delivering significant value through innovative pharmacy solutions, care management, and data driven insights.
David Cordani will continue as Executive Chairman of the Board following the transition, providing strategic oversight, maintaining key stakeholder relationships, and supporting Evanko during the handover period. Cordani’s tenure as CEO has been marked by transformative growth, including the $67 billion acquisition of Express Scripts in 2018, the rebranding to The Cigna Group, and the successful navigation of the pandemic and evolving regulatory landscape.
The combined platform is expected to deliver measurable value through improved medication adherence, reduced total cost of care, fewer avoidable hospitalizations, and better clinical outcomes for patients with complex needs. Evernorth has emphasized a seamless transition for CarePathRx customers, with no immediate changes to service levels, provider relationships, or patient access. Integration efforts will focus on aligning technology platforms, clinical protocols, and data analytics to create unified workflows and enhanced insights for payers and providers.
The Cigna Group Board of Directors stated: “Brian Evanko is an exceptional leader with deep industry knowledge, proven execution ability, and a clear vision for the future of healthcare. His track record at Evernorth demonstrates he is uniquely prepared to lead The Cigna Group into its next chapter of growth and innovation. We also thank David Cordani for his extraordinary leadership over the past 15 years and look forward to his continued contributions as Executive Chairman.”
Evanko commented: “I am deeply honoured to be selected as the next CEO of The Cigna Group. David has built an incredible foundation of innovation, customer focus, and strong performance. I look forward to working closely with him during the transition and building on that legacy to deliver even greater value to our customers, clients, partners, and shareholders.”
The leadership transition is expected to be seamless, with no immediate changes to strategy, operations, or customer commitments. Cigna’s Board expressed full confidence in Evanko’s ability to continue driving the company’s mission of improving health and vitality for the people and communities it serves.
“This is the right moment for a thoughtful, planned transition that ensures continuity and momentum. Brian is the ideal leader to take The Cigna Group forward he knows our business intimately and has already proven he can deliver results at scale.”
