Indian surgeons have performed a groundbreaking live robotic telesurgery from Delhi to London, marking a new era in global telemedicine powered by indigenous innovation and 5G connectivity.

Glimpse:

Doctors from Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, Delhi, used the Indian-made Mantra Surgical Robotic System to perform a kidney surgery remotely during an international conference in London, highlighting India’s growing leadership in robotic healthcare technology.

In a historic moment for Indian medical science, doctors at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre successfully conducted a live robotic-assisted kidney surgery remotely between Delhi and London. The partial nephrectomy procedure was carried out using the India-developed Mantra Surgical Robotic System by SS Innovations, with the surgeon operating from Gurugram while the patient remained in Delhi. Supported by Airtel’s 5G standalone network, the operation achieved real-time responsiveness with a latency as low as 32 milliseconds.

The surgery was broadcast live at the ERUS25 European Congress on robotic urology in London, showcasing India’s capabilities in precision robotics and connectivity-driven medicine. Experts praised the demonstration for its potential to revolutionize healthcare access enabling senior surgeons to operate or guide complex procedures across geographies.

Leaders from the institute and SS Innovations said the milestone reflects India’s fusion of engineering excellence and clinical expertise. The success of this cross-border telesurgery opens pathways for remote surgical networks, offering advanced treatment options to underserved regions globally.

“This demonstration proves how Indian innovation can redefine surgical precision and global collaboration.”
