Shalby Hospitals Announces Major ₹1,000 Crore Expansion Plan Across India

Shalby Hospitals has unveiled a significant growth strategy to invest around ₹1,000 crore over the next two-to-five years to open new multi-specialty hospitals in Lucknow, Kolkata, Nagpur, Pune and a greenfield project in Mumbai.

Glimpse:

The Ahmedabad-based hospital chain currently operates 17 hospitals (2,300 beds) and plans to add new 200–250-bed hospitals in key metro cities, shifting from its earlier orthopaedic-speciality focus to a broader multi-specialty model. The investments will use a mix of owned and asset-light models.

Shalby Hospitals, known for its leadership in orthopaedics, is embarking on an ambitious expansion across India with a targeted investment of approximately ₹1,000 crore. The company plans to build new multi-specialty hospitals in Lucknow, Kolkata, Nagpur and Pune over the next two-to-five years, and will also develop a greenfield facility in Mumbai’s Santacruz area, expected to take its total bed capacity to around 2,500.

The expansion represents a strategic shift from Shalby’s earlier positioning as a predominantly orthopaedic specialist to a comprehensive multi-specialty care provider. According to Shanay Shah, President of Shalby Hospitals, each new hospital will typically have about 200-250 beds  a size chosen to balance operational efficiency, scalability and patient experience rather than building large thousand-bed facilities.

To keep investments manageable and agile, Shalby will employ a blend of fully-owned hospitals and asset-light models, especially in metros where investment per bed is estimated at ₹1.5–3 crore depending on location and infrastructure. In the Mumbai project, because of its asset-light structure, the investment per bed is expected to be at the lower end of that range.

Although orthopaedic services remain core to its identity, the hospital chain reports that orthopaedics now contributes around 35 % of its revenue, with the remainder coming from other specialties such as cardiology, oncology, neurology, nephrology and transplants signalling the broader care model the company is pursuing.

With this expansion, Shalby is placing itself to capture the rising demand for tertiary healthcare in India’s faster-growing cities and metro regions, leveraging its established brand, clinical expertise and infrastructure platform to scale across new geographies.

“Each new hospital in our next phase will focus on operational efficiency and patient experience, rather than simply size. We believe this model will drive sustainable growth.”
