Glimpse:
Assam’s government has committed to major healthcare infrastructure upgrades in the Barak Valley region by approving the construction of a super-specialty facility with six clinical departments including cardiology, neurology, nephrology and urology. Spread over 16 bighas and to be completed in 30 months, the hospital will include ICU, emergency, dialysis and post-operative units.
During his two-day visit to the Barak Valley, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formally laid the foundation stone for a 208-bed super-specialty hospital at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). The institution will be built on approximately 16 bighas of land and is supported by funding from JICA under the Assam Health System Strengthening Project.
The total estimated cost of the project is approximately ₹300 crore, covering infrastructure development and procurement of advanced medical equipment, with a target completion period of 30 months. The hospital will operate six specialist departments: cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology and urology.
In terms of capacity, each of the six departments will have about 20 beds. In addition, there will be 14 emergency beds, 27 ICU/ICCU beds, 24 post-operative care beds, 16 pre-operative beds and 10 dialysis beds. The facility will also include 25 paying cabins for private access.
CM Sarma emphasised that Silchar Medical College, one of Assam’s oldest medical colleges, is receiving special focus. He highlighted that the state now boasts 14 medical colleges and hospitals and stressed that the new hospital aims to ensure advanced care such as cardiac and neurological surgeries is available locally rather than sending patients elsewhere.
The foundation of this hospital marks a significant step in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the region, especially for the Barak Valley, improving access to high-end medical services and enhancing the overall medical education infrastructure in Assam.
“This will be a milestone project to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Barak Valley.”
