Medanta, the Medicity, has announced a major expansion into Varanasi with plans to set up a 400-bed multi-specialty tertiary care hospital in the holy city. The ₹550 crore project, unveiled on February 27, 2026, reflects Medanta’s commitment to bridging the healthcare gap in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and making high-quality, advanced medical services accessible to millions of people in the region who currently travel long distances for specialised treatment.
The new hospital will be designed as a comprehensive facility equipped with modern infrastructure, including advanced cardiac catheterisation labs, modular operation theatres with robotic surgery systems, dedicated oncology and bone marrow transplant units, neurosciences centre, high-end critical care units, and state-of-the-art diagnostic services (MRI, CT, PET-CT, and advanced pathology). Special emphasis will be placed on mother and child care, organ transplantation, and emergency & trauma services to serve the large population of Varanasi, surrounding districts, and parts of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
Medanta leadership stated that the Varanasi hospital will follow the same high clinical standards and patient-centric approach that have defined the group’s flagship facility in Gurugram and other centres. The project will also include academic and research components to train doctors, nurses, and paramedics, contributing to the development of skilled healthcare professionals in Eastern UP. The hospital is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment while supporting medical tourism in the culturally significant city.
The announcement has been welcomed by local leaders, doctors, and residents who have long demanded quality tertiary care closer to home. The project aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s broader push to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in tier-2 cities and is likely to reduce the financial and logistical burden on families seeking advanced treatment.
Construction is expected to commence soon, with the hospital planned to be commissioned in phases over the next 3–4 years. Medanta has indicated that the Varanasi facility will be empanelled under major insurance schemes, including Ayushman Bharat, to ensure wide accessibility and affordability.
“Varanasi and Eastern Uttar Pradesh deserve world-class healthcare without the hardship of long travel. With this ₹550 crore investment, Medanta is bringing advanced, compassionate care closer to the people, fulfilling our mission of healing with excellence.”
