Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, has appointed Joe Kim, MD, as its new Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Kim brings extensive experience in clinical operations, quality improvement, and physician leadership to the role, succeeding the outgoing CMO and guiding the hospital through a period of continued growth, digital transformation, and focus on patient-centered care within the broader Providence system.

Glimpse:

The appointment, effective January 13, 2026, positions Dr. Kim to oversee medical staff affairs, quality and safety programs, clinical strategy, and integration of advanced technologies including AI-enabled tools at one of Southern California’s most respected community hospitals. A practicing emergency medicine physician with a track record of driving operational excellence, Dr. Kim is expected to strengthen collaboration between clinicians, administration, and the wider Providence network.

Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center has named Joe Kim, MD, as its new Chief Medical Officer, filling a key leadership position with a seasoned clinician and administrator who has spent much of his career advancing quality, safety, and operational performance in complex healthcare environments. The appointment, announced on January 13, 2026, follows a comprehensive national search and takes effect immediately.

Dr. Kim joins Saint Joseph from his previous role as Associate Chief Medical Officer at a large academic medical center in the Pacific Northwest, where he led initiatives that improved clinical outcomes, reduced hospital-acquired conditions, and enhanced physician engagement across multiple service lines. Board-certified in emergency medicine, he maintains an active clinical practice and is widely recognized for his ability to bridge the clinical and administrative worlds while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

At Providence Saint Joseph a 392-bed acute care hospital serving the San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities Dr. Kim will oversee medical staff affairs, quality and patient safety programs, clinical strategy, and the integration of emerging technologies, including AI-supported decision tools and digital care pathways. He succeeds the previous CMO, who stepped down after a distinguished tenure, and will report directly to hospital President and CEO Alan Y. Fujimoto.

“Dr. Kim brings exactly the right combination of clinical credibility, operational expertise, and forward-thinking leadership that our medical staff and patients deserve,” said Mr. Fujimoto. “As we continue to grow our services and deepen our commitment to innovative, compassionate care, his guidance will be invaluable.”

Dr. Kim expressed enthusiasm about joining the Providence family and contributing to Saint Joseph’s legacy of service in the region. “Providence Saint Joseph has a long-standing reputation for putting patients first while embracing innovation,” he said. “I’m honored to partner with such a talented team to advance clinical excellence, support our physicians and caregivers, and ensure every patient receives the highest quality care possible.”

The appointment arrives at a pivotal time for the hospital, which has expanded its cardiovascular, oncology, orthopedics, and women’s health services in recent years while integrating advanced digital tools to improve care coordination and patient experience. Dr. Kim’s leadership is expected to further accelerate these efforts, with particular emphasis on quality metrics, physician well-being, and the thoughtful adoption of AI and data-driven insights in daily practice.

“Healthcare leadership today requires balancing clinical excellence with operational innovation. I’m excited to help Providence Saint Joseph continue raising the bar for both.”
