eClinicalWorks Introduces QR Code Based Patient Intake to Support CMS ‘Kill the Clipboard’ Initiative

eClinicalWorks has launched a new QR code enabled patient intake solution as part of its support for the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) “Kill the Clipboard” campaign. The feature allows patients to complete registration, consent forms, medical history, and insurance details on their smartphones before arriving at the clinic, significantly reducing waiting times and paperwork.

Glimpse:

Patients simply scan a QR code displayed at the clinic or receive it via text/email. The secure, mobile friendly form auto populates data into the eClinicalWorks EHR system. This paperless intake process improves accuracy, enhances patient satisfaction, and helps practices meet CMS goals of reducing administrative burden and digitising patient workflows.

eClinicalWorks, a leading EHR and practice management software provider, has rolled out a QR code based digital patient intake solution to modernise the front office experience and align with the CMS “Kill the Clipboard” initiative.

The new feature enables patients to fill out registration forms, consent documents, medical history, insurance information, and other required paperwork directly on their mobile phones by scanning a simple QR code. Once completed, the data flows seamlessly into the eClinicalWorks electronic health record system, eliminating the need for physical clipboards and manual data entry by staff.

This digital intake process is expected to dramatically reduce waiting room time, minimise errors, improve data accuracy, and enhance overall patient experience. It also supports healthcare providers in meeting regulatory expectations for digitisation and administrative efficiency.

The solution is now available to all eClinicalWorks users and is being promoted as a practical step toward a fully paperless patient journey.

“Our QR code intake solution is a direct response to the CMS ‘Kill the Clipboard’ push. By letting patients complete forms on their phones, we’re making the visit smoother, faster, and far less frustrating for both patients and staff.”
