Abbott Unveils India’s First Dual-Chamber Leadless Pacemaker, Pioneering i2i Tech

Abbott has introduced the AVEIR DR system in India, the world’s first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker. It uses implant-to-implant (i2i™) communication between two tiny devices, eliminating wires and the need for a chest pocket.

Glimpse:

The AVEIR DR system by Abbott marks a breakthrough in cardiac rhythm management in India. The device consists of two miniaturized, fully leadless implants one in the right atrium and one in the right ventricle that synchronize beat by beat using i2i™ technology. The system offers a less invasive option, lower complication risk, and more natural pacing for patients who need two-chamber support.

Abbott has formally launched the AVEIR DR dual-chamber leadless pacemaker system in India, the first of its kind globally in clinical use. This system comprises two leadless devices AVEIR AR for the right atrium and AVEIR VR for the right ventricle. These communicate using Abbott’s proprietary implant-to-implant (i2i™) technology, enabling synchronized pacing of both chambers without leads or a surgical pocket.

Traditional pacemakers rely on leads and a generator pocket under the skin, which carry risks like infections, lead fractures, and limitations in mobility. The AVEIR DR system avoids these by placing both devices directly inside the heart via catheter insertion, anchoring them with a screw-in mechanism, and enabling future retrieval if needed.

Performance in clinical trials has been strong. The IDE (Investigational Device Exemption) study reported about 98.3% implant success, with over 97% of subjects achieving atrio-ventricular synchrony across various daily activities. These results helped gain regulatory clearances (including FDA and Indian approvals) ahead of the launch.

Abbott points out that nearly one in three Indian patients needing pacemakers require dual-chamber pacing. The new AVEIR DR system therefore has the potential to greatly expand appropriate leadless pacing usage and offer advanced therapy to more patients.

Ajay Singh Chauhan, General Manager for Abbott’s Cardiac Rhythm Management business in India & Southeast Asia, affirmed that the system reflects Abbott’s commitment to bringing cutting-edge, minimally invasive cardiac rhythm solutions to Indian patients.

“With AVEIR DR, Abbott is bringing forward a device that matches patients’ anatomy and lifestyles offering dual-chamber pacing without wires, reducing risk, and improving cardiac synchrony.”
