AIIMS Bilaspur Set for Major Expansion with 960 Bed Capacity Upgrade

AIIMS Bilaspur is planning a significant capacity expansion to 960 beds, aiming to strengthen tertiary healthcare services and meet rising patient demand across Himachal Pradesh and neighboring regions.

Glimpse:

Announced in April 2026, AIIMS Bilaspur plans to increase its bed capacity from around 750 to 960 beds. The expansion will support growing patient inflow, which currently includes over 1,800 daily OPD visits and 70–80 emergency cases. The institute is also evaluating the introduction of air ambulance services to improve emergency care access in remote and mountainous areas.

AIIMS Bilaspur is preparing for a major infrastructure expansion as it plans to scale up its hospital capacity to 960 beds. The move comes in response to increasing patient demand and the institute’s growing role as a key referral center for Himachal Pradesh and nearby states such as Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Currently operating with approximately 750 beds and maintaining around 80% occupancy, the hospital handles a high patient load, including more than 1,800 outpatient visits daily and dozens of emergency cases. This rising demand has made capacity expansion a critical priority for the institution.

Established in 2017 and developed with significant government investment, AIIMS Bilaspur has rapidly evolved into a major tertiary care center with 41 functional departments and a growing team of specialists. The expansion aims to further strengthen its ability to bridge the gap between secondary and advanced healthcare services.

In addition to increasing bed capacity, the institute is also focusing on enhancing its clinical capabilities. Advanced oncology services including radiotherapy, medical oncology, and surgical oncology are being supported by modern diagnostic tools such as PET scans and immunohistochemistry. A bone marrow transplant center is also in development to further strengthen cancer care services.

AIIMS Bilaspur has also been expanding into complex surgical procedures, including advanced neurosurgeries and spine operations, reflecting its growing expertise in super specialty care. These developments are expected to significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce dependency on metro based hospitals.

Given the challenging terrain of Himachal Pradesh, the institute is also evaluating the introduction of air ambulance services. With existing helipad infrastructure, this initiative could enable faster transportation of critically ill patients from remote regions to the hospital.

Looking ahead, AIIMS Bilaspur has an even broader vision, with long term plans to scale its capacity beyond 960 beds to as many as 1,500 beds. Additional infrastructure projects, including a dedicated trauma center and mortuary, are already underway to support future growth.
