Researchers at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad have developed “EchoPulse,” an AI and VR-based system designed to improve the speed, accuracy, and accessibility of heart disease diagnosis.
Glimpse:
EchoPulse, developed by IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, uses artificial intelligence and virtual reality to analyze heart scan data and present it in an interactive 3D format. The system enables faster, more accurate diagnosis while reducing reliance on large datasets and manual interpretation.
In a significant advancement in cardiac diagnostics, researchers at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad have developed an innovative AI- and VR-powered system called EchoPulse. The technology is designed to assist doctors in diagnosing heart diseases more efficiently by combining artificial intelligence with immersive 3D visualization.
Developed by Professor A. C. S. Rao from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, EchoPulse analyzes heart scan images and automatically detects patterns related to cardiac function. This reduces the need for time consuming manual interpretation and enables quicker clinical decision making.
A standout feature of the system is its integration with virtual reality, allowing clinicians to view heart activity in a fully interactive three dimensional environment. This immersive visualization helps doctors better understand complex structural and functional issues within the heart, improving diagnostic accuracy.
Unlike traditional AI models that depend heavily on large volumes of labeled training data, EchoPulse is designed to work with fewer pre-labeled datasets, making it more adaptable across different healthcare settings.
The system also incorporates explainable AI, ensuring transparency in how conclusions are reached. This allows clinicians to trust and verify the AI’s output rather than treating it as a “black box.”
EchoPulse can estimate key clinical parameters such as the heart’s pumping efficiency an important indicator for conditions like heart failure. By enabling early detection and better treatment planning, the technology has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes.
Supported by a research grant of approximately ₹47 lakh from the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), the project is currently being further developed and tested for broader clinical use.
Experts believe this innovation could be particularly impactful in resource limited settings, where access to specialized cardiac expertise is limited. By simplifying complex medical data into clear insights, EchoPulse may help bridge healthcare gaps and make advanced diagnostics more widely accessible.
Overall, the development reflects a growing trend in healthcare leveraging AI and immersive technologies to move toward faster, more accurate, and patient centric diagnostics.
“By turning complex heart data into clear insights, EchoPulse could make advanced cardiac diagnosis accessible to all.”
