Glimpse:
Senior endocrinologist Dr. Nikhil Tandon has been given interim charge as Director of AIIMS Delhi after Dr. M. Srinivas moved to NITI Aayog. The arrangement will last up to six months or until a permanent director is appointed.
In a key leadership transition at India’s top medical institution, Dr. Nikhil Tandon has been appointed as the interim director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The move follows the exit of former director Dr. M. Srinivas, who has taken up a new role as a full time member of NITI Aayog.
Dr. Tandon, a senior endocrinologist and currently the Dean (Academics) as well as Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at AIIMS, will handle the director’s responsibilities in addition to his existing duties.
The appointment has been made under Rule 9(4) of the AIIMS Rules, 2019, as a temporary “working arrangement.” According to official communication, he will serve in this capacity for a period of six months or until a full time director is appointed, whichever is earlier.
Dr. Tandon is a highly respected figure in Indian medicine, with over 25 years of experience in clinical research and healthcare delivery, particularly in cardio metabolic diseases such as diabetes and thyroid disorders.
The transition ensures continuity in leadership at AIIMS Delhi, which plays a crucial role in tertiary care, medical education, and research in India. Meanwhile, the government is expected to initiate the process of selecting a permanent director in the coming months.
Overall, the appointment reflects a standard administrative approach during leadership transitions maintaining operational stability while a long term successor is identified.
“A temporary appointment ensures continuity while the search for a long term leader begins.”
