The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a drone based healthcare delivery system to improve last mile access in remote tribal regions, enabling faster transport of medicines, diagnostics, and critical medical supplies.

Announced in April 2026, the initiative is being implemented in the Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district in collaboration with the Real Time Governance System (RTGS), technology partner Redwing, and support from the UPS Foundation. The drones transport diagnostic samples, essential medicines, and emergency supplies between remote health centres and major hospitals. The program has already completed over 1,000 flights, covering 40,000 km and delivering more than 25,000 medical items.
In a major step toward improving healthcare accessibility in remote regions, the Andhra Pradesh government has deployed a drone based medical delivery system in tribal areas of the Alluri Sitarama Raju district. The initiative is designed to overcome geographical barriers and strengthen last mile healthcare delivery in some of the state’s most hard to reach locations.
The drones are being used to transport diagnostic samples, essential medicines, and critical medical supplies between smaller primary health centres and larger facilities such as Paderu Medical College and Government General Hospital. This ensures faster turnaround times for diagnostics and timely availability of life saving treatments.
The project is being implemented by the state health department in partnership with the Alluri Sitarama Raju district administration, the Real Time Governance System (RTGS), and drone technology provider Redwing, with additional backing from the US based UPS Foundation.
Early results indicate strong impact, with the initiative already completing more than 1,000 drone flights, covering over 40,000 kilometres and delivering upwards of 25,000 medical products. This demonstrates the scalability and efficiency of drone based logistics in healthcare delivery.
By linking remote healthcare centres with major hospitals through aerial logistics, the program is significantly reducing delays in diagnostics and treatment, particularly in tribal regions where terrain and connectivity often hinder timely care.
The initiative reflects a broader shift toward using advanced technologies like drones to address healthcare inequities, improve service delivery, and ensure that even the most underserved populations have access to essential medical services.
