CommonSpirit Reaches Three-Year In-Network Agreement with Humana, Ensuring Continued Medicare Advantage Access

CommonSpirit Health, one of the largest not-for-profit health systems in the U.S., has signed a new three-year contract with Humana to remain in-network for Medicare Advantage members. The agreement secures continued access to CommonSpirit’s hospitals, clinics, and physicians for millions of Humana Medicare Advantage enrollees, providing stability for patients and avoiding potential disruptions in care that often arise from network disputes.

Glimpse:

The multi-year contract covers CommonSpirit’s extensive network across 24 states, including major markets in the Midwest, South, and West. It ensures seamless in-network coverage for routine and specialized care, including emergency services, elective procedures, chronic disease management, and cancer care. Both organizations emphasized patient continuity, fair reimbursement, and collaboration on value-based care initiatives as key drivers of the deal, which prevents the kind of abrupt network exits that have affected Medicare Advantage members in recent years.

CommonSpirit Health and Humana have finalized a new three-year agreement that keeps CommonSpirit hospitals, outpatient clinics, and physicians in Humana’s Medicare Advantage networks through 2028. The deal, announced on February 27, 2026, brings stability to millions of seniors who rely on Humana Medicare Advantage plans and receive care within CommonSpirit’s broad footprint spanning 24 states.

CommonSpirit, one of the largest Catholic health systems in the United States, operates more than 140 hospitals and hundreds of care sites. The agreement ensures that Humana Medicare Advantage members will continue to have in-network access to high-quality services ranging from primary care and emergency medicine to complex specialties such as cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, neurology, and transplant programs. This multi-year commitment reduces uncertainty for patients, physicians, and health plan members, who had faced potential network disruptions in previous contract cycles.

Both parties highlighted that the contract includes provisions for value-based care collaboration, quality improvement initiatives, and fair reimbursement terms that support CommonSpirit’s mission of serving communities, including vulnerable and underserved populations. Humana expressed appreciation for CommonSpirit’s commitment to high-quality, compassionate care, while CommonSpirit leadership noted that maintaining a strong relationship with a major Medicare Advantage payer is essential for sustaining access and affordability for older adults in their service areas.

The agreement comes at a time when Medicare Advantage enrollment continues to grow rapidly, and network adequacy remains a key concern for beneficiaries. By securing a long-term in-network relationship, CommonSpirit and Humana are helping to minimize care fragmentation and out-of-network costs that can burden seniors. The deal is expected to take effect immediately and run through the end of 2028, with options for extension.

This development provides welcome reassurance to patients, providers, and plan members across CommonSpirit’s service areas, reinforcing the importance of stable provider-payer partnerships in delivering consistent, high-quality care in the evolving Medicare Advantage landscape.

β€œPatients deserve uninterrupted access to the care they trust. This three-year agreement with Humana ensures stability and continued high-quality service for the many Medicare Advantage members who rely on CommonSpirit’s hospitals and physicians.”
