IHH Healthcare Bolsters India Presence with Strategic Fortis & Malar Stakes, Eyes Major Capacity Growth

IHH Healthcare Asia’s largest private healthcare provider has completed a strategic move to deepen its footprint in India by acquiring significant stakes in Fortis Healthcare and Fortis Malar Hospitals, setting the stage for a major expansion of hospital capacity and care networks across the country.

Glimpse:

The group now holds 31.17 % in Fortis Healthcare and 62.73 % in Malar Hospitals after completing its open offers. This milestone unlocks growth plans including adding around 2,000 beds by 2028 growing its network to an estimated 7,000 beds nationwide and driving synergies across its India hospital portfolio.

IHH Healthcare Berhad, a global integrated healthcare services provider headquartered in Malaysia, has accelerated its India expansion strategy following successful completion of open offers for shares in Fortis Healthcare Limited and Fortis Malar Hospitals Limited. With ownership now at 31.17 % for Fortis and 62.73 % for Malar, IHH has cleared a significant regulatory and strategic hurdle that had previously delayed its India expansion plans.

This move is seen as part of IHH’s broader ambition to solidify and scale its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing healthcare markets. India’s demand for advanced clinical services and capacity expansion is rising rapidly due to demographic shifts, increasing insurance coverage and demand for higher-complexity care. IHH’s leadership has expressed confidence that strengthened control over Fortis and Malar will enable deeper integration, operational efficiencies and stronger delivery of world-class services across specialties from tertiary to quaternary care.Β

Looking ahead, IHH has set an ambitious expansion roadmap, planning to add approximately 2,000 new hospital beds to its Indian network by 2028, growing total capacity to around 7,000 beds across 35 hospitals. This capacity build-out aims to enhance access to care, improve patient outcomes, and support complex clinical procedures across multiple states. Hospitals under the expanded IHH umbrella will benefit from shared protocols, pooled procurement, integrated talent development and unified referral pathways, which the group believes will bolster quality and operational excellence.Β

Executives at IHH have also highlighted the strategic value of combining Fortis’s strong brand with Gleneagles Healthcare India an IHH subsidiary network to unlock synergies in clinical delivery, procurement and innovation. By integrating systems and best practices, the group hopes to elevate care standards and compete effectively in the Indian healthcare landscape.

β€œOur strengthened stakes in Fortis and Malar reflect our conviction in India’s healthcare growth story we are stepping into the next phase of expansion to deliver broader access to high-quality care and drive clinical innovation.”
