The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Charnock Hospital in Kolkata to accelerate the translation of advanced research into practical healthcare solutions, with a strong focus on validating digital health technologies, AI-driven clinical analytics, joint training, and delivering affordable care to underprivileged urban communities through mobile and stationary units.

Glimpse:

Signed in the presence of Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur, and Prashant Sharma, Managing Director of Charnock Hospital, the MoU aims to bridge the gap between academic research and clinical practice. Key areas include benchmarking diagnostic and digital health tools, AI and machine learning for clinical data, collaborative research and training programs, rapid deployment of innovations, and building a scalable model to serve slum areas and Kolkata Municipal Corporation schools. The partnership was formalized around March 26, 2026.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has entered into a strategic partnership with Charnock Hospital by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to promote innovation, research, and technological advancements in the healthcare sector. This collaboration combines IIT Kharagpur’s robust academic research capabilities with Charnock Hospital’s clinical ecosystem, aiming to speed up the movement of cutting-edge developments from the laboratory into real-world patient care settings.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will work closely on validating and benchmarking diagnostic tools along with digital health technologies developed at IIT Kharagpur. The partnership will also incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for analyzing clinical data, undertake joint research projects, organize training initiatives for both clinicians and engineers, and facilitate the quick deployment of new innovations in hospital and community healthcare environments.

A standout feature of this collaboration is its dedication to addressing the healthcare needs of the urban underprivileged population. The partners intend to create a scalable and affordable healthcare delivery model that reaches economically disadvantaged communities often overlooked in favor of rural-focused initiatives. Plans include setting up mobile and stationary healthcare units in slum areas of Kolkata, with these units also extending services to schools under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

This MoU represents a meaningful step toward developing patient-centric solutions that integrate academic excellence with practical clinical expertise. By fostering such ties, the initiative is expected to drive impactful advancements while ensuring that technological benefits reach those who need them most in urban settings.

“The main purpose of the collaboration is to make healthcare accessible to the underprivileged living in the urban areas. We are all bothered about rural health care. But we seem to be least concerned about the health care of the urban poor. Through the tie-up with Charnock Hospital, we intend to make our technology in health care affordable and available to the urban poor through some mobile and stationary units in the slum areas. The units will also be visiting the schools of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.”
