Kaiser Permanente has officially begun construction of Oregon’s first fully electric hospital in Hillsboro. The new state of the-art medical centre will be 100% electric, targeting net-zero carbon emissions and setting a new benchmark for sustainable healthcare infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest. The facility is scheduled to open in 2029.

Glimpse:

The upcoming hospital will feature all electric systems for heating, cooling, hot water, and medical equipment. It will incorporate advanced energy efficient design, renewable energy integration, and sustainable building materials. The project reflects Kaiser Permanente’s long term commitment to decarbonising its operations and creating environmentally responsible healthcare facilities.

Kaiser Permanente has broken ground on a groundbreaking project Oregon’s first fully electric hospital in Hillsboro. The new facility marks a significant milestone in the health system’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and lead the transition toward sustainable healthcare infrastructure.

The hospital will operate entirely on electricity, eliminating the use of natural gas for heating, hot water, and other energy needs. It will incorporate cutting edge energy efficient technologies, on site renewable energy solutions, and sustainable construction practices to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. The design also prioritises patient comfort, operational efficiency, and resilience against climate related risks.

Once completed in 2029, the hospital will provide comprehensive medical services to the growing population in Washington County and surrounding areas. It will include modern inpatient and outpatient facilities, advanced diagnostic and surgical capabilities, and spaces designed to support healing and well being.

This project is part of Kaiser Permanente’s broader national strategy to decarbonise its facilities and operations. The health system has set ambitious sustainability goals and views fully electric hospitals as a critical step toward building a more environmentally responsible and future ready healthcare organisation.

“This hospital represents our commitment to building a healthier future not just for our patients today, but for generations to come. By going fully electric, we are reducing our environmental impact while delivering world class care.”
