On April 13, 2026, the state cabinet approved the JICA-supported project to upgrade newly established government medical colleges in four districts and enhance nursing colleges in multiple locations. The primary objective is to deliver affordable and quality tertiary healthcare to citizens while strengthening medical education and nursing services.

The Maharashtra cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, gave its nod to a significant healthcare development project on April 13, 2026. Backed by ₹3,708 crore in financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the initiative aims to bolster tertiary healthcare delivery, medical education, and nursing systems throughout the state. Managed by the Medical Education and Drugs Department, the project will focus on upgrading infrastructure and equipping medical colleges, nursing institutions, and their affiliated hospitals with modern facilities.

The funding will primarily target newly established government medical colleges in Wardha, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Ahilyanagar. It will also support upgrades to existing nursing colleges at GT Hospital and St. George’s Hospital in Mumbai, as well as those in Dhule, Solapur, Ambajogai, Akola, IGMC Nagpur, Ratnagiri, Palghar, and Dharashiv. Additionally, new nursing colleges are planned in Baramati, Sangli (Miraj), and Kolhapur.

Advanced medical equipment will be provided to government medical colleges in Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Hingoli, Jalna, Nashik, Parbhani, Satara, and Wardha. The project further includes provisions for human resource development in hospital management and administration under the Indo-Japan Academic Exchange Programme.

This comprehensive effort is expected to modernize healthcare infrastructure, enhance training quality, and improve service delivery across both urban and rural areas. Officials have emphasized that the core goal is to ensure affordable and accessible medical care for the people of Maharashtra.

“The primary goal of the initiative is to ensure affordable medical care for the citizens of Maharashtra.”
