Max Healthcare Institute Ltd is ramping up its growth plans with a major capacity expansion targeting a total of 10,000 beds across India. The initiative, backed by an investment of ₹4,000–5,000 crore funded entirely through internal accruals, aims to meet rising domestic demand from aspirational India while boosting the country’s medical tourism sector.

Glimpse:

Chairman and Managing Director Abhay Soi announced that the company will nearly double its current capacity in the coming years. Last year, Max operated around 5,200 beds and expects to reach close to 6,700 beds by the end of the current financial year. Recent additions include a 400-bed tower at Max Smart Specialty Hospital in Saket (Delhi), a 300-bed facility in Mumbai, and a 200-bed unit in Mohali. A 500-bed expansion in Gurgaon is slated for completion in the next 6–7 months. The long-term plan includes adding approximately 3,700 beds by 2028 with a total investment of ₹6,000 crore.

Max Healthcare is gearing up for one of its most ambitious growth phases yet, with clear plans to scale its total bed capacity to 10,000 over the next three to four years. The Delhi based hospital chain is focusing on both brownfield and greenfield projects to cater to the growing healthcare needs of aspirational India while positioning itself as a preferred destination for international medical tourists.

Abhay Soi, Chairman and Managing Director of Max Healthcare, highlighted that the expansion will be entirely funded through internal accruals, with an estimated outlay of ₹4,000–5,000 crore in the near term. The company has already made significant strides, adding a new 400-bed tower at Max Smart Specialty Hospital in Saket, which features over 120 critical care beds, 10 modular operating theatres, and advanced cath labs. Other recent launches include a 300-bed facility in Mumbai and a 200-bed unit in Mohali, Punjab. A further 500-bed addition in Gurgaon is expected to become operational within the next six to seven months.

These new generation facilities are equipped with state of the art infrastructure and technology to support high acuity care across multiple specialties, including cardiac sciences, oncology, renal care, neurosciences, gastroenterology, paediatrics, robotic surgery, and organ transplants. Soi emphasised that the expansions are designed to serve both domestic patients seeking quality care and the rapidly growing medical tourism segment, which currently brings patients from 145 countries and is expanding at 25 per cent annually.

Looking further ahead, Max Healthcare has committed to investing around ₹6,000 crore by 2028 to add nearly 3,700 beds across key locations, with a special focus on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. This comprehensive strategy is expected to strengthen the company’s pan India presence and reinforce India’s ambition to become a global hub for advanced medical care.

“The new facilities are aimed at both aspirational India as well as global medical tourism, and we are increasing our capacity to 10,000 beds over the next 3-4 years. We get patients from 145 countries right now. It is a business which is growing at 25 per cent per year for us.”
