SURGING SHE-SURGEONS - Dr. Manjula Anagani , Gynecologist, Sr.Laparoscopic &; Robotic Surgeon

Hi Everyone! I am Dr. Manjula Anagani, Chief Gynaecologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon, Robotic Surgeon, and Minimally Invasive Surgeon in Urogynaecology at Care Hospitals Banjara Hills and Arete Hospitals Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

Surgery has always been my passion, and fortunately, my passion aligns with my profession—caring for patients in the field of gynaecology with surgery as a significant impact. During my medical college, I envisioned a surgical career but noticed a dearth of female surgeons with minimal patient interactions. This realization led me to choose gynaecology, where I could provide minimally invasive surgery and enhance patient care.

In the early 1990s and late 80s, a considerable gap existed in women’s healthcare. Open surgeries meant prolonged hospital stays, impacting not just the woman but the entire family. The challenge was to change this scenario, find alternatives to extensive surgeries like hysterectomy, and introduce innovative techniques.

Our journey began with minimally invasive surgery, specifically laparoscopy, challenging the norms of a patriarchal society. Recognizing the need for change, we established new protocols prioritizing patient safety and surgeon comfort. We pioneered techniques for neo vagina reconstruction, stem cell therapy, and various innovations, offering solutions to surgeries once deemed challenging.

Challenges and Breakthroughs in Minimally Invasive Surgery
One significant challenge was the physical strain on the back and shoulders due to minimally invasive surgery. Ergonomics became paramount, prompting us to develop our entry points, ensuring both safety and efficiency. Overcoming societal stereotypes, where surgery was traditionally associated with male surgeons, required persistent efforts. By saving patients through successful surgeries and educating colleagues through continuous medical education, we aimed to break barriers.

Spreading Awareness and Building a Legacy
Simultaneously, we launched a column in a leading daily, spreading awareness on avoiding unnecessary hysterectomies and educating patients on various minimally invasive techniques. Educating colleagues and the next generation became a focus to ensure the continuity of advancements in the field.

Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation
To aspiring surgeons, I emphasize the importance of self-belief and hard work. I believe 97% hard work, coupled with a positive attitude, can lead to 100% success, with a touch of luck. Embrace opportunities, think creatively, and approach problems uniquely. The team mantra—Technique, Technology, Team, Training, and Temperament—serves as a guiding principle for achieving the best outcomes.

A 24/7 Commitment to Surgical Excellence
In conclusion, surgical branches demand dedication 24/7, 365 days a year. Choosing this profession means justifying that choice every day. Teach the next generation, master your techniques, and contribute to the evolution of surgical practices.

Wishing everyone success and happiness in their endeavors. Bye!
