Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple major health projects worth ₹2,092 crore in Assam, including new medical colleges, super-specialty blocks, nursing colleges, and advanced diagnostic facilities. The initiatives aim to strengthen tertiary care, expand medical education, improve access in underserved districts, and reduce patient referrals outside the state.

Glimpse:

The ₹2,092 crore package includes the foundation stone for three new medical colleges (in Dhemaji, Goalpara, and Charaideo), super-specialty blocks at existing medical colleges, new nursing colleges, and upgrades to district hospitals with advanced equipment. Shah emphasized that these projects will add thousands of medical seats, create employment, and bring world-class care closer to Assam’s people, aligning with the state’s push for self-reliance in healthcare delivery.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Assam on February 27, 2026, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for a series of transformative health infrastructure projects collectively valued at ₹2,092 crore. The high-profile event, held in Guwahati and attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Health Minister Ashanta Neog, and senior officials, focused on bolstering the state’s medical education capacity and tertiary care capabilities to serve its growing population and reduce dependence on facilities in other states.

Among the key announcements was the foundation stone laying for three new government medical colleges in Dhemaji, Goalpara, and Charaideo districts, each with 100 MBBS seats and associated teaching hospitals. These institutions will significantly increase the number of medical graduates in Assam, helping address the doctor shortage in rural and tribal areas while creating long-term employment for faculty, nurses, and support staff. Shah also inaugurated super-specialty blocks at several existing medical colleges, adding advanced departments in cardiology, neurology, oncology, nephrology, and gastroenterology, equipped with modern cath labs, ICUs, modular operation theatres, and diagnostic suites.

The package further includes new nursing colleges to expand nursing education and address paramedical shortages, along with upgrades to district hospitals featuring high-end equipment such as MRI, CT scanners, digital X-ray systems, and automated labs. These enhancements will enable faster, more accurate diagnosis at the district level and reduce the need for patients to travel to Guwahati or beyond for routine advanced imaging and specialist consultations. The minister highlighted that the projects are funded through a mix of central and state resources under schemes like PMSSY and the National Health Mission, reflecting the Centre’s commitment to strengthening healthcare in the Northeast.

Amit Shah praised Assam’s progress under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, noting improvements in health indicators, increased insurance coverage through Ayushman Bharat, and the state’s proactive approach to public health challenges. He stressed that these investments would not only save lives by enabling timely interventions but also contribute to economic growth by creating skilled jobs and reducing the economic burden of medical travel on families. The minister expressed confidence that the new facilities would position Assam as a healthcare leader in the region, benefiting neighbouring states as well.

The inauguration has been widely welcomed by medical professionals, students, and patient advocacy groups in Assam, who see it as a long-overdue step toward equitable, high-quality care in a state that has historically faced infrastructure and workforce challenges. Implementation will be monitored closely to ensure timely completion and operational readiness of the new institutions and upgrades.

“These projects are not just buildings they are lifelines for millions. With this ₹2,092 crore investment, we are ensuring that no Assamese family has to travel far or face financial ruin to access world-class healthcare.”
