UnitedHealthcare Launches Avery: Generative AI Companion to Simplify Healthcare Navigation for Millions

UnitedHealthcare has introduced Avery, a new generative AI companion designed to provide real time, conversational support to members. Launched on March 26, 2026, Avery helps users understand their coverage, check claims, estimate costs, find in network providers, and even schedule appointments, offering a more personalized and coordinated healthcare experience.

Avery is now available to approximately 6.5 million members in employer sponsored plans and 160,000 Medicare Advantage members. It uses generative AI to deliver natural language responses and actionable assistance through the UnitedHealthcare app and website. The company plans to expand access to a total of 20.5 million commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid members by the end of 2026.

UnitedHealthcare has rolled out a new generative AI tool called Avery to make health insurance easier and more user-friendly for its members. Announced on March 26, 2026, Avery acts as an intelligent digital companion that responds in natural, conversational language to questions about benefits, coverage details, claims status, cost estimates, and care options. Available through the company’s mobile app and online portal, it integrates data from multiple sources to deliver a seamless experience.

One of Avery’s key capabilities is helping members navigate the often complex process of finding care. It can interpret individual health plan information, suggest suitable in network providers based on preferences and costs, and even contact primary care providers to schedule appointments on behalf of the user. The AI also assists with wellness programs, rewards, ID card requests, and explanations of benefits, allowing members to focus more on their health rather than administrative tasks.

Avery further supports customer service representatives by providing real time insights into member history, helping them resolve issues more quickly and efficiently. This dual benefit for both members and staff aims to reduce administrative burden while improving overall satisfaction and access to care.

The rollout began with around 6.5 million members enrolled in employer-sponsored health plans and 160,000 Medicare Advantage members. UnitedHealthcare intends to scale Avery rapidly, extending availability to a total of 20.5 million commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid members by the end of 2026.
