Medanta has inaugurated an Advanced Surgical Heart Failure Clinic designed specifically to treat patients with complex and end-stage cardiac disease. The facility combines high-level diagnostics, surgical interventions (including mechanical circulatory support and transplant planning) and rehabilitation services under one roof.
Glimpse:
The clinic brings together cardiac surgeons, heart-failure specialists, interventional cardiologists and rehab teams to create a multidisciplinary care pathway. Services include right-heart catheterisation, genetic testing, LVAD/ECMO support and bridge-to-transplant planning. The aim: to reduce mortality in severe heart-failure patients who donโt respond to conventional therapy.
In response to the growing burden of advanced heart-failure in India, Medanta has opened its Advanced Surgical Heart Failure Clinic to deliver integrated surgical and rehabilitation care for patients in the most challenging categories.
The facility features a multidiscipline โHeart Failure Teamโ comprised of cardiac surgeons, heart-failure cardiologists, interventional specialists and rehabilitation practitioners. It provides advanced diagnostics such as cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), right-heart catheterisation, gene-based cardiac testing and pre-/post-transplant rehab pathways.
Treatment options now extend beyond medication, allowing for mechanical circulatory support (left, right or bi-ventricular assist devices), bridging therapies (ECMO, LVAD) and transplant readiness. Medantaโs team explained that one-year mortality in end-stage heart failure ranges between 21% to 23.7% depending on underlying cause, underscoring the need for aggressive, surgical-first solutions.
The clinic sets referral criteria for when standard therapy is insufficient, including: ejection fraction <35%, multiple hospitalisations, persistent high natriuretic peptides, advanced symptoms (NYHA IIIB/IV), low blood pressures or arrhythmia shocks. Patients meeting these criteria will be fast-tracked into the advanced surgical pathway.
Dr Anil Bhan (Chairman, Cardiac Surgery) at Medanta emphasised the goal: โOur clinic will specifically address these critical needs by focusing on MCS, transplant planning and high-risk surgery, ensuring best possible outcomes for patients facing these challenging conditions.โ
Similarly, Dr Naresh Trehan (Chairman & MD, Medanta) highlighted that for many patients with end-stage heart failure, conventional management alone is not enough. The clinic bridges that gap with specialised surgical care and integrated rehabilitation.
The launch reinforces Medantaโs expanding cardiovascular leadership, promising new hope for patients who have exhausted typical therapies. The next steps will likely focus on streamlining access, expanding referral networks and ensuring outcomes tracking.
โHeart failure represents one of the most pressing challenges in modern medicine. For patients with end-stage or complex heart failure, conventional medical management alone is often not enough. Our Advanced Surgical Heart Failure Clinic is designed to bridge this gap, offering advanced surgical solutions and a chance for a better quality of lifeโ.
