Mysuru The Department of Orthopaedics at JSS Hospital has marked a significant breakthrough in advanced joint surgery by performing a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) utilising Virtual Implant Positioning (VIP) technology. Under the leadership of Dr H. Basavanagowdappa and a skilled team including Dr Narayanappa, Dr C.P. Madhu and Dr Siddalingamurthy, the team undertook a complex case involving a patient with severe shoulder dysfunction. 
Reverse shoulder arthroplasty is typically used for patients whose rotator‐cuff muscles are irreparably damaged, limiting traditional shoulder-replacement options. The VIP technology enabled detailed 3D planning and virtual simulation of implant placement ahead of surgery enhancing precision, reducing intra-operative surprises and improving post-operative mobility. 
The patient, who suffered from chronic shoulder pain and had difficulty with daily tasks, underwent the surgery with successful results: the implant was placed with planned orientation, and initial outcomes show improved range-of-motion and comfort. JSS Hospital highlighted that this marks a new benchmark for orthopaedic care in the region. 
The use of VIP technology marks an evolution in shoulder arthroplasty from conventional surgical methods to digitally planned, patient-specific implant placement. Hospitals offering such precision care can potentially lower complication rates, speed recovery and tailor treatments to complex anatomy or prior failed surgeries. JSS Hospital’s move positions it among advanced centres offering high-end joint replacement technologies outside major metro cities.
