CARE Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, has completed 1,000 gastrointestinal (GI) surgeries using the da Vinci robotic system achieved within just 18 months marking a major milestone in bringing high-precision minimally invasive surgery to Eastern India.

The surgeries, led by Dr. B. B. Das (Clinical Director – Surgical Gastroenterology & Robotic Surgery), used the da Vinci robotic platform’s 3D HD vision, precise EndoWrist instruments and ergonomic controls to manage complex cases like scarless hernia repair, combined gallbladder + hysterectomy, emergency splenectomy and more. According to the hospital, robotic-assisted procedures have led to safer operations, reduced tissue trauma, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery for patients.

Under the guidance of Dr. B. B. Das, the hospital leveraged the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. This technology enables minimally invasive surgery with high precision and control: surgeons operate via a console with magnified 3D vision and manipulate robotic instruments that offer more dexterity (through “EndoWrist” joints) than standard laparoscopic tools, making complex and delicate GI procedures safer and more effective.
Among the many procedures, CARE notes especially difficult and high-value cases: scarless hernia repair, combined gallbladder removal with hysterectomy, emergency splenectomy, and complicated GI-organ surgeries in patients with prior surgical history. Recovery times have reportedly improved, with many patients discharged earlier and experiencing fewer postoperative complications, compared with traditional open or standard laparoscopic surgery.
Hospital leadership believes this milestone reflects not only surgeon skill but also a broader shift: bringing world-class robotic-surgery standards to Eastern India enabling patients from Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and surrounding regions access to high-precision GI care without travelling to metros.
