Athenahealth a Boston-based provider of network-enabled healthcare software and services is expanding its EHR capabilities by integrating Microsoft Dragon Copilot as part of its ambient AI suite. The new option will be embedded directly in athenaOne during the first half of 2026, joining the existing Ambient Notes solution already used by more than 170,000 clinicians across nearly 50 specialties. 

This integration gives individual clinicians within a practice the flexibility to choose which ambient AI model best suits their documentation workflows a unique choice among EHR providers. By leveraging ambient listening during patient visits, Dragon Copilot can automatically generate draft clinical notes within seconds, streamlining documentation and reducing the administrative workload that often dominates clinicians’ days. 

Athenahealth’s chief product and operations officer emphasises that ambient technology is transforming how care is documented and delivered, allowing clinicians to focus more on patients and less on paperwork. Meanwhile, Microsoft highlights Dragon Copilot’s role in simplifying clinical workflows, helping clinicians concentrate on care delivery while lessening the burden of documentation tasks. 

With this update, athenaOne continues to support an open, flexible EHR ecosystem one that gives clinician users choice, improves efficiency, and aligns with broader trends in health IT where AI assistants help drive productivity and reduce burnout.
