Sunway Medical Centre Unveils Malaysia’s First Photon-Counting CT Scanner: A Leap in Precision Diagnostics

Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City, has launched Malaysia’s first photon-counting CT scanner, the Siemens Healthineers NAEOTOM Alpha, introducing groundbreaking technology that delivers ultra-high resolution imaging, reduced radiation doses, and enhanced diagnostic accuracy across specialties like cardiology, oncology, and neurology.

Glimpse:

In a milestone for Malaysian private healthcare, Sunway Medical Centre introduced the nation’s inaugural photon-counting CT (PCCT) system on December 12, 2025, in partnership with Siemens Healthineers. The NAEOTOM Alpha scanner counts individual X-ray photons for sharper images, better tissue characterization, lower radiation exposure, and faster scans making it safer for vulnerable patients and enabling more confident clinical decisions in complex cases.

Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC), has set a new benchmark in Malaysian healthcare by installing and launching the country’s first photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) scanner, the revolutionary Siemens Healthineers NAEOTOM Alpha. Officially unveiled on December 12, 2025, this next-generation imaging system marks the arrival of cutting-edge technology previously limited to select global institutions.

Unlike traditional CT scanners that measure total X-ray energy, photon-counting CT directly counts and analyzes individual photons, capturing their energy spectra for inherently spectral imaging. This results in ultra-high spatial resolution, superior tissue differentiation, fewer artifacts, and significantly reduced radiation dosesโ€”often up to 50% lowerโ€”without compromising image quality.

The benefits extend across clinical applications: sharper cardiac imaging for better coronary artery assessment, enhanced oncology scans for detecting small lesions, improved neurological evaluations, and safer musculoskeletal diagnostics. Faster scan times also improve patient comfort, particularly for children, the elderly, and those requiring multiple follow-ups.

The launch, attended by Malaysia’s Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, underscores a shift toward precision-driven, digitally enabled healthcare amid rising non-communicable diseases.

As Malaysia’s largest private quaternary hospitalโ€”ranked among Newsweek’s World’s Top 250 Hospitals in 2024 and 2025โ€”SMC continues to lead with investments in advanced tools, including AI-enabled workflows like myExam Companion for consistent results.

This collaboration with Siemens Healthineers not only elevates diagnostic capabilities but also positions Malaysia on the global map for innovative imaging, promising faster, more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment pathways.

โ€œPhoton-counting CT is a breakthrough that transforms diagnostic imaging worldwide. We are proud to collaborate with Sunway Medical Centre to bring this technology to Malaysia. Together, we are unlocking new frontiers in precision diagnostics that will help clinicians make faster and more confident treatment decisions.โ€
